Welcome to another edition of leadersayswhat’s the Weekender, a little bit’a thought to start your weekend on the right track. Why just a little bit’a? Because it’s the weekend!
How many times have you tried to prioritize your comfort? We want to make our lives easier, but is that really what we need? Josh Radnor says we don’t.
You may know Josh from the hit show How I Met Your Mother, but he’s also an award winning director, producer, and screenwriter. With these achievements it might be tempting to relax, but as Josh told Pete Holmes:
We say we want a friction-free life, but I don’t think we do. We like the struggle. We like having accomplished ‘the thing.’ When I’m just like, ‘Wow, I can do anything today. I can read books and watch something,’ but then I’m like, ‘No I need something to do really do.’ I need a sense of urgency. I need a challenge. And I keep creating things for myself to give me that sense of friction.
Once you’ve reached some degree of success, you are at a fork in the road. One path leads to care-free days. You won’t get much done, but haven’t you already reached your goals? The other path can be re-named Radnor Road. On this path, we look for challenges. We explore better ways of doing things. We take a proactive approach to enhance our surroundings and the people who choose to follow us.
The path you chose is dependent on what you want to accomplish and how hungry you are to achieve it. If comfort is key, I hope you find it. However, if leadership and organizational growth is your focus, there’s no time for siestas. Make some friction.
