In the Weekender’s second week, I’d like to thank everyone for their support and interest. With all the energy you exert in the workweek, I appreciate the opportunity to make you think a little more on your day off.

In an interview on NPR, musician and master satirist “Weird Al” Yankovic was walking the listener through his process of creating new songs.

I’ll generate ideas, and 99% of those ideas are horrible. I have no problem coming up with ideas, but good ideas are hard to come by. When I do find a good idea, I’ll start riffing on concepts based on that idea and come up with pages and pages of notes based on that.

How much energy are you putting into your not-so-great ideas? These are time wasters that will distract you from pursuing the initiatives that are truly meaningful and worthwhile. As commendable as it may be to “never say die,” recognize when the drawbacks are outweighing the gains so you can move on before another second of your valuable time is squandered.
